Background

About me

I am a PhD in Educational Technology and Human-Computer Interaction from Iowa State University and I hold a Masters Degree in Learning, Technology, and Education from the Learning Sciences Research Institute at the University of Nottingham. I was awarded Chevening and Fulbright scholarships to complete my studies.

As an experienced educator and researcher, I have dedicated the past decade of my career to the advancement of education. Prior to my time at Universidad Tecnológica (UTEC) in my home country of Uruguay, I served as a secondary school teacher for ten years. At UTEC, I developed the World Languages program for undergraduate students, aimed at supporting their foreign language proficiency as well as developing academic writing skills.

In 2017, I pursued further academic opportunities by relocating to the United Kingdom to earn a Master of Arts in Learning, Technology and Education from the University of Nottingham. During my studies, I designed the Bricks and Bits project, which engaged over 600 children from provincial Uruguay in STEM activities. My Master's dissertation analyzed the impact of a design curriculum on female engagement in STEM, using a service learning and culturally relevant learning design approach.

Building upon my previous experiences, I embarked on my PhD in Education and Human-Computer Interaction. My dissertation thesis explored an original curriculum that blended speculative fiction and youth participatory action research epistemologies to engage youth in overcoming discursive loops regarding data, algorithms, and AI by creating multiple cartographies representing their struggles, possible alternatives, and acts of resistance.

In addition to my PhD studies, I have also taken on the role of developing the Masters of Arts in Learning Design at UTEC since 2020. In this role, we are preparing over 70 learning designers who are committed to creating innovative and meaningful learning spaces through participatory design and creative thinking methods.

I have been recently named the Director of UTEC (East Region) and I will be leading the development of the new UTEC campus in the city of Minas serving the provinces of Canelones, Lavalleja, Maldonado, Rocha, and Treinta y Tres. The new campus is scheduled for its inauguration in 2025.
